Great TED TALK from Dr Joe Dispenza we were shown in class the other day about how our brain (neuroplasticity) has the ability to change its self. Habits are acutely connected to memory and we are able to change…

An introduction to neuroplasticity…

The Changing Brain: TED TALK, Dr Joe Dispenza

One mans meat is another mans Poison

You are unique, so what suits your neighbour may not suite you at all.

Great article from Dr Natasha (creator of GAPS) about understanding and listening to your bodies needs, getting back in touch with its natural impulses. We are individuals and no one diet suits us all but its important to try and embrace a natural wholefood diet to be able to truely connect with our true desires gastronomically.

“You are unique, so what suits your neighbour may not suite you at all.”

It was helpful to read this and put myself at a ease for cheating on the intro diet and like certain habits I’ve broken it takes time and few steps backward to go forward. Understanding myself and limitations while adapting will help me move forward on this program…

Reboot!… take one million

579349_10150693615936314_739679748_nDear O Dear, I started this blog with great intentions like many things in my life but I’ve sure fell of the radar the past month or so.
I thought of my posts everyday and often would be plagued with new ideas for posts and even took photos of food and what not. Problem is since my last post I had not been practicing what I’ve preached so far, so that bought on an inability to write new posts. If I could not manage to be living the life that would help me heal let alone help you on the same path my posts would be useless and full of false claims, as they say live by example…

Anyhoo after weeks of frustration at my incapabilities and increased pain from disease I’ve slowly been taking new steps toward a disease free, happier me and maybe just maybe this blog will share the benefits and lessons learned from new achivements.

STEPS FORWARD:

I Enrolled to Study a Bachalor of Science in Nutrional Medicine (may change to Natropathy) at Endeavour College of Natural Health, I feel this is the best way to support my interest in nutrition and my own health!

My current plan of attack is to start practicing the GAPS (Gut and Psycology Syndrome) Diet by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride. After many years knowing diet was key I’ve looked into many diets that have some claim to be the answer to natural healing of my Ulcerative Colitis. I read about so many that all have merit that I became confused by which was best for me I decided now I’m semi settled its time I get some outside help and direction which is when I came across this diet that is kind of like the SCD (Specific Carbohydrate Diet) and Paleo rolled into one. I found a practitioner here in Sydney Bronwyn Sach whom will be guiding me through the process, I’ve always found guidance has helped me if someone else is involved I’m less likely to deviate and give up like I have up until now.

I’m on my fourth day of the Introductory Diet which I have had a few slips the last couple days. Its not easy and I’m not noticing much change in symptoms just yet. Basically I’m functioning on homemade bone broth soups, fresh ginger lemon in tea and I’ve had the diet modified so I can include one Spectrum juice a day (thank god some variety). I’ve definately noticed fatigue which is supposedly the die of bad bacteria where the main aim of this diet is to rebalance the internal gut flora which can take up to 2 years. For someone whos been primarily vegetarian for the last few years its not easy consuming the meat fats but I’m told this should change.

To support my new treatment plan I’ve started practicing the following:

  • Dry brushing morning and night which is great for helping the Lympahic System Detox.
  •  At least 15 mins of meditation morning or night or both to calm the mind helping me with my daily mental challenges.
  •  Bentonite Clay (between meals) which also helps with detoxification namely removing any metal build up in the body.
  •  Drink Filtered Water
  • Salt flush every few days particularily in the beginning helps remove the build up in the bowel.

So that basically sums up my current plan of attack, let me know if any of you have tried GAPS  and how its helped you? Hopefully posts will now become a regular occurance I’ll share my Soup recipes along with sustainable food options and I’ve got a few great little documentries to report on! The further I get along this journey the better my posts will get!

Much Love,

Lys

Sweet Treat: 5 minute Cacao + Chia Balls

IMG_0316Whenever I’m really getting that craving for something sweet after dinner or with my herbal tea I’ve taken to whipping these Raw Cacao + Chia balls up. They literally take me no more than 5 minutes to make and are really tasty they were inspired by cacao protein balls often buy but I’m not going to go as far as saying they are that healthy but they are definitely a better option then a bar of chocolate you impulse buy in the store.

These are:

  • Gluten Free
  • Dairy Free
  • Soy Free
  • Full of Omega 3
  • Antioxidants

Being a cook i just throw things together and they work although I’m going to give you basic ingredient outlines as this is not really a recipe that can be messed up easily…

Recipe:

1 Cup Almond Meal1/4 Cup Raw Cacao Powder
1/4 Cup Flaxseed Meal
1/4 Cup Gluten Free Muesli (with rice crisps, for some crunch)
1 Tbls Coconut Oil
11/2 Tbls Agave Syrup or Honey
2 Tbls Chia Seeds

Add a little more oil or agave if the mixture isn’t moist enough then roll into bite size balls. Should make around 6 balls.

One is just enough to hit that sweet tooth!

Enjoy.

Much Love, Lys x

To be Honest…

So I started with such great intentions (as usual) and of course I can’t stick to the challenge I set myself.
I’ve spent the last two weeks on and off juices pretty much one on one day off and some days really falling off the reboot wagon.

This weekend for example was particularly bad and trust me I’m feeling the pain now…
I just keep telling myself its ok and don’t beat myself up about it. Its a process and I’m the type who needs to slowly make changes in small steps to accomplish the end goal and with this disease it seems to take me years. Each little fall helps me be stronger next time…

Came to a realization that I really need to start looking further into whats wrong with me. Its been almost 4 years since I went to a gastroenteriologist  or had a colonoscopy. I know bloody terrible but was adamant about trying to heal naturally and living abroad was harder to arrange the medical appointments (excuses). Anyway with out sounding too much like a broken record, 2014 is gonna be the year I find the balance for my health and discover the true reasons my body acts the way it does.

Looking into alternative and conventional treatments, I have faith that I will get there in the end!

Lys

P.S. I have a few juice recipes and healthy treats to post also just gotta get my but into gear and get posting…

Reboot: Get Enough Sleep!

Reboot: Get Enough Sleep!

I know majority of people still make sleep a last priority like we all say “I know I should eat the salad but pizza is so tasty” we say “I know I should get at least 8 hours sleep but I could achieve so much more if I just stay up a little longer”… I dunno about you but I often find myself fucking around on my laptop or phone right before sleep leaving my mind way to active before closing my eyes for slumber. This is another part of my lifestyle I’m aiming to change as I know I am severely affected by lack of sleep causing me to:

  • Lose concentration
  • Blood shot eyes
  • Make bad food choices for quick energy
  • Bags under my eyes
  • Negative attitude and laziness
  • Lack of productivity and patience
  • Bad skin

This is a great article “Are you making mistakes with your sleep” from Nerd Fitness going through the ins and outs of sleep from negative effects from lack of it and the many benefits of a good sleep and steps to take toward achieving that good sleep, for example…

Take the time to read this article its full of great information, tips and links to help understand sleep and how to get more of it plus its easy to read.

Steps I’m starting to instill for myself, keeping in mind I’m an early morning person:

  1. Turn of laptop and put phone away at 9-9:30pm
  2. Meditate for 15 mins
  3. A quick journal entry following Good Think steps
  4. Read a book for a bit or if you have a partner Sex
  5. Go to sleep 10-10:30pm and let my body clock wake me.
  6. Have a power nap in the afternoon when possible

Heres to a lifetime of good sleep and optimum health one step at a time!

Much Love, Lys

Ingredients:

3 – Medium Carrots
1/2 – Large Beetroot
2 – Celery sticks
Ice

I’ll have to start listing the nutritional contents…

Rebuild: Good Think Inc

I Watched an intriguing TED talk from Shawn Achor “The Happy Secret To Better Work”. This witty talk brings our awareness to how and why we can be happy in life and work by reversing the formula for success and happiness. Through a few positive steps we can change the way we process the world.
This sketch note from Balanced Action sums the talk up…

shawn-achor-small21 Days, 5 steps to change the way you process the world:

1. Write down 3 new things you are grateful for each day.2. One Random act of Kindness – help someone, contact someone you care for, share a memory, give a hug…
3. Exercise- 30 minute walk, Yoga is all about being present and positive…
4. Meditate – 10 minutes a day can make all the difference
5. Journal one happy experience you had that day – I dunno bout you but I mostly journal when I’m overwhelmed by frustrating thoughts.

I’m going to give this plan a go along with my Juice Reboot how about you join me!
